Bruno Mars seems to be the next big music star that makes every song a catchy, pop hit. Every time I hear Just the Way You Are or The Lazy Song, I can’t help but sing along; his newest song, Marry You, has me singing just as loud. And, just like the other songs, I had to stop and listen to his lyrics. To me, it seems like Bruno has crafted yet another song about loving a girl unconditionally yet moving a tad too quickly in the relationship.
In Marry You, Bruno Mars throws the idea of marriage around in his head, deciding he wants to make a huge commitment casually and quickly. In the first couple lines, Bruno sings “We’re looking for something dumb to do / Hey baby, I think I wanna marry you.” Getting married isn’t exactly something dumb to do, but usually is a beautiful ceremony of two adults who have been dating and engaged for some time. Also, Bruno has not thought out his proposal, merely stating “I think I wanna marry you;” a person should probably know they want to marry someone instead of just thinking they want to. Further along in the song, Bruno sings, “If you wake up and you wanna break up that’s cool / No I won’t blame you. It was fun, girl.” Marriages, and serious relationships in general, are not as disposable as Bruno makes them out to be, but typically last longer and involve more feelings. A breakup is not usually painless and blameless.
While Bruno may not encourage young people to specifically go out and get married, he does encourage rushed relationships and moving a bit too quickly. I like Marry You, but I would advise others to move a bit more slowly and not rush into relationships. For the meantime, feel free to sing along to another one of Bruno Mars’ catchy hits, but think twice before jumping into something that should take time and commitment.
